Theme Park Attendence 2007
For the umpteenth year in a row, Disney theme parks have dominated the annual attendance reports. Coming from attendance estimator ERA/TEA, Disney themeparks worldwide have attracted over 116 million guests, easily topping the combined attendance from Merlin, Universal Studios, Six Flags and Busch. Topping the 2007 worldwide attendance for yet another year was Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom with over 17 million viewers. The 2.6% gain was helped by the "continuing success of [the] 'Year of a Million Dreams' marketing campaign." Opening during this period was the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor.
Across the country, Disneyland Park in California came in second with nearly 14.9 million guests. The 1% growth was helped by the reopened Submarines and Pirates Lair.
The duo of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyseas took up the next two spots with 13.9 and 12.4 million respectively, both gaining from their numbers last year. Also on the international front was Disneyland Park Paris which had a wonderful year with 12 million guests. This 13+ percent rise is a good sign that the resort is getting back into shape.
Taking up the next three spots were the Disney World treo of Epcot (10.9 million), Disney-MGM Studios (9.5 million) and Disney's Animal Kingdom (9.5 million). This was Epcot's best year since 1997 and its third best year since at least 1992. The park (which saw the debut of The Seas with Nemo and Friends) increased 4.5% from last year as did the Studios. In the final year of the Disney-MGM Studios (which saw the debut of such shows as the Jedi Training Academy and High School Musical Pep Rally), again saw its biggest year since 1997.
Capping off the Walt Disney World parks was the Animal Kingdom which saw a large 6.5% increase thanks mostly to the continued success of Expedition Everest along with the hit new show, Finding Nemo: The Musical. This marks the first year the park crossed the 9 million mark and the future looks just as bright.
All in all, Disney theme parks took up the top 8 spots on the worldwide chart, futher demonstrating Disney's dominance in the market. However, not everything was roses for Disney. Coming in at number 13 was Disney's California Adventure which saw a depressing 4.5% drop thanks mostly to adding nothing new and announcing plans to overhaul most of the park. Also far from a 'success story' was Hong Kong Disneyland which saw a horrific 20.2% drop does not bode well for the China park. And perhaps the worst was the park that did not even make the top 25. Walt Disney Studios Paris saw just 2.5 million guests, only 20% of its sister park's attendance. While it did get a 13.5% increase in attendance, with those numbers that fact is moot.
On the waterpark front, both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon made modest gains this year thanks to a slightly cooler summer. The 1.5% gains for each means that Typhoon Lagoon ranked number one with 2.1 million guests with Blizzard Beach just behind with 1.9 million.
It is important to note that these numbers are estimates, as Disney (nor any of the other major operators) does not release official attendance figures. The officil press release can be found at http://www.themeit.com/attendance_report2007.pdf.
